Counselling is, quite literally, a “talking” therapy. A large number of professional counsellors have themselves experienced and recovered from conditions like these. They have then gone on to gain professional qualifications in order to pass on their experience of coping and recovering. How would you like to get some “hands on” experience while you’re learning? If you show promise through your assignments, you may also be offered volunteer opportunities while studying. Like the ability to obtain student membership with the NCS (see below), this is unique to students of MyDistance Learning College.
The materials start with the basic principles of Counseling and Psychotherapy and progresses through to counselling tools and techniques, which can be used to work with clients’ symptoms. It also gives you a good insight into a number of therapies currently in use, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Person-Centred Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy, plus many others.
Students are then encouraged and guided to explore some of the many reasons for a person to seek therapy, including those mentioned above, and others such as schizophrenia and abuse. You will also learn about the ways in which therapy is delivered.
A reasonable level of literacy is required, but there are no entry restrictions.
You just need a keen interest in the subject, and will ideally have studied the subject or ancillary disciplines at a lower level if you want to progress quickly.
